Scholarships and Awards
Scholarships in chemistry
Herbert G. Bohn Scholarships
The department awards up to four scholarships to new students majoring
in
chemistry or a related area. The department also awards a scholarship
to a
sophomore chemistry major selected by the department as outstanding
in
chemistry.
The Louis B. Astbury Endowed Scholarship
The department will award one scholarship to a new student majoring
in chemistry
with a strong preference being given to students interested in environmental
chemistry.
The Robert M. Brooker Scholarship
The department will award one scholarship to a new student majoring
in chemistry
with a strong preference being given to students interested in chemistry
education.
New students interested in applying for the Bohn Scholarship, Asbury
Scholarship, or Brooker Scholarship in chemistry should request
an application
from the Office of Admissions.
Awards
Each year, the department recognizes the achievement of students
in chemistry by
presenting several awards.
CRC Freshman Chemistry Awards—The department
awards a CRC
Handbook of Chemistry and Physics to students exhibiting outstanding
abilities in General Chemistry.
Bethlehem Steel Award—This award and a copy
of the CRC Handbook of Chemistry
and Physics are given to the one student chosen as most outstanding
in General
Chemistry.
Claude Brooker Organic Chemistry Award—This
award is presented to the
outstanding student in organic chemistry. It is named for the father
of the late
Robert M. Brooker, former chair of the department and professor
of organic
chemistry.
Wayne Patrick Comer Award—This award is presented
to the outstanding junior
chemistry major. It is named for a former student who passed away
before
entering medical school.
Robert M. Brooker Award—This award is presented
to the outstanding junior
student majoring in the natural sciences or mathematics.
